The environment control features in The Grid 2 turn your device into a remote control for electrical equipment around your home or school.
Environment control allows individuals to independently turn on lights, answer and open the door etc, with independence, in their home.
One of the core features of The Grid 2 is to provide an interface for environment control equipment. Our software works with the major specialist environment control interfaces.
Infra-red environment control
This is used to operate anything that is controlled with an infra-red remote. The device learns the unique code if you ‘shoot’ the remote into the receiver. The Grid 2 is then able to send this unique code to control devices such as TV, DVD player and infra-red toys.
Infra-red environment control requires line of sight – i.e. you have to point the remote in the direction of the device you want to control.
Radio environment control
With a radio receiver and transmitter, accessories such as sockets for lamps, fans, etc and relays can be controlled
Servus Environment Control
Sensory Software supplies a complete systems for environment control using infrared and radio.

Language and voices
The Grid 2 is available in many languages, as shown in the table below, and includes the latest life-like and natural sounding voices from Acapela.
Most languages include both male and female voices, and you can also use The Grid 2 multi-lingually, switching between languages when you need to.
The Grid 2 has been designed to be accessed by everyone, from those with complex disabilities to people with good motor control.
Any grid or grid set can be accessed with any type of alternative access device, making it possible for everyone to use the software.
We have also made The Grid 2 an open platform that supports almost all major alternative access products.
The Grid 2 includes all the features you need to use everyday Windows programs, without using a standard keyboard and mouse.
Computer control without keyboard and mouse
The Grid 2 replaces your keyboard, so you can type into other programs, write Word documents or emails, use the internet and more. It is accessible with switches, touch screen, headpointer, joystick… see access options for more.
The Grid 2 also replaces your mouse, so you can move the mouse and click anywhere on the screen.
It can be used with almost all Windows programs. Here are a few ways to use with The Grid 2 every day:
Get smart, get fast
The Grid 2 uses smart techniques to speed up access.
Here is an example for saving a document in Word:
Using The Grid 2 you can access a menu item by moving the mouse to the File menu, then clicking, moving to Save and clicking again. This works, but is quite slow.
A faster solution is to use The Grid 2 to scan the menu directly – across to File, and then down to Save.
Better still, you can set up a single cell to perform the action. Word grids include a cell that types Control-S. So in one selection, you can save your document.
Computer access made easy
The Grid 2 includes many resources for simplified computer control. Control Facebook, YouTube and Skype with simple accessible grids that are easy to use.
Ready made resources for email and SMS make long distance communication accessible for all. The Grid 2 makes these tasks simple and completely accessible – no matter which access method you use.
For people with limited literacy skills, The Grid 2 includes a wide range of symbol based communication resources. Not only are our grids easy to use – they are also easy to setup and edit.
“It is quick and so simple to add vocabulary!”
Making simple grids
Many users will create bespoke resources for their clients. Using the easy editing interface, making grids to speak words and messages could not be simpler.
Customising the appearance of your symbols grids is also easy. Use the included Widgit or SymbolStix symbols or alternatively you can quickly import photos. Other symbol supported symbol libraries including PCS and Makaton are available as add-ons.
Any cell can link to any grid and you can make as many grids and cells as you want!
Grid sets are collections of grids for use with The Grid 2 software. Included in every language is a comprehensive set of ready made resources, designed for a wide range of users.
Users of The Grid 2 include people with widely varying levels of cognitive and physical disability. From simple message grids to larger grids with intelligent grammar support, our grid sets are designed to make communication easy.

Full speech support and switch access options provide access to learning by almost all students and simple performance reporting allows you to record student progress.
