Cortical Visual Impairment is responsible for 30-40% of visual impairments in children globally. In Africa, almost 50% of children with Cerebral Palsy demonstrate visual acuity or visual field deficits indicative of CVI. However, it is often misdiagnosed, or missed altogether and glasses cannot not fix this visual impairment! So what is it, how to identify it, how to treat it and how to offer education and communication to a child with CVI? Come and learn.

Using Symbols to Improve Classroom Inclusion & Communication

This comprehensive training on the software and applying it in class, shows you the various symbol libraries included - no more hunting for pictures for your lessons! The picture libraries support different visual needs, and have the ability to adjust features such as skin tone, and alternative access methods for physical needs. We learn about when to use an interactive digital page or a printed one, and how to use the many ready-made templates. We will discuss making your own core vocabulary charts, fringe vocabulary resources, and relevant design and layout considerations for better access. Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) is the term used to describe all sorts of strategies and devices which assist people with little or no functional speech.

This course introduces the main concepts & explores the basics for people new to this topic. We discuss the challenges and frustrations experienced by limited communication; look at high- and low-tech solutions; discuss options for people who are literate or not; and introduce a few technologies available for people who also have a physical disability.

Introduction to Assistive Technology - Part 1

Technology and classroom resources can make life so much easier for both learners and educators! This course introduces a range of devices and strategies which can assist people with physical disabilities to function more independently. Highly relevant for SBST (School Based Support Teams) and DBST (District Based Support Team) conducting SIAS screening who are tasked with identifying learners at risk of experiencing barriers to inclusion, so that appropriate recommendations are made.

This course will introduce participants to alternative ways of controlling a computer, reading and writing support tools, alternative communication devices, educational resources and so much more.  With real curriculum-based examples and case studies of children with various disabilities, learn how to identify the needs and possible solutions to ensure optimum inclusion in your schools.

The Senses: Impact on Learning & Behaviour

The way that people respond to input from the world around them (noise, light, touch) is called their sensory profile. Some people are very sensitive to this stimulation, which can affect their attention, emotions and behaviour. These are all important factors in the ability to participate in education. This course explains the senses, and how you can support people who have sensory modulation difficulty to better participate in learning. Conducted by a Sensory Integration trained Occupational Therapist, this is an introductory level course. (Please note it is not SI training for OT's, however the strategies taught will be relevant for all participants.) You'll also learn about the multiple benefits and applications of sensory rooms.
